TikTok has the most powerful discovery algorithm of any platform. A creator with zero followers can get a hundred thousand views on their first video if the content connects. But it’s not the right platform for everyone, and there are privacy and data sovereignty considerations worth understanding clearly before you decide whether to join.

How the TikTok algorithm works

TikTok doesn’t show content to your followers as its primary filter — it shows it to a random sample of people and measures their reaction. If the video generates a good completion rate (how many people watch to the end), comments, shares and replays, the algorithm amplifies it progressively. A video can take weeks to break through.

Keys to a TikTok video that performs:

  • The first 2 seconds decide everything. If there’s no visual or text hook at the start, people scroll and the algorithm penalises it.
  • Optimal length is 15–60 seconds for discovery. Longer videos (up to 10 minutes) work for already loyal audiences.
  • Sound matters. TikTok is a musical-visual platform. Using trending audio increases discovery. Using your own original music is possible and recommended for musicians.

Format and dimensions

Technical specs:

  • Resolution: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16 vertical)
  • Accepted formats: MP4, MOV
  • Maximum file size: 500 MB
  • Duration: 15 sec – 10 min (15–60 sec recommended for discovery)

Safe zone: TikTok’s interface overlays interaction buttons (like, comment, share, sound) on the bottom right. Leave at least 80px clear on the right and the final 250px at the bottom free of text and important elements.

Which artists benefit most from TikTok

Highly suited for:

  • Ceramicists, sculptors, illustrators: the transformation process (clay taking shape, a line becoming a finished illustration) is visually hypnotic in short form.
  • Musicians: short covers, a recording session in 30 seconds, music theory explained visually, song making-of. The #MusicTok category has hundreds of millions of views.
  • Dancers and acrobats: movement is perfect TikTok content.
  • Painters and muralists: time-lapses of the process, “reveal” of the finished work.

Less suited for:

  • Artists whose work is hard to photograph or film (highly abstract music without a visual component, conceptual sculpture, writing).
  • Artists who want to build a specific local audience (TikTok is global by nature).

Privacy and data sovereignty

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company headquartered in China. Several European, North American, and Australian governments have banned TikTok on official devices due to concerns about Chinese government access to data. The EU’s NIS2 Directive and ongoing European regulatory pressure reflect real institutional concerns about the platform.

What this means for you as an artist:

  • Your data (location, behaviour, phone contacts if you grant permission) may be accessible to ByteDance and potentially Chinese authorities.
  • Content you upload may be used to train AI models.
  • The platform could be restricted or shut down in certain countries at any point, destroying any audience you’ve built there.

The decision is yours, but it should be an informed one. If you decide to use TikTok, practical recommendations:

  • Don’t connect the account with your professional phone or business accounts.
  • Don’t grant permissions for contacts, gallery, or location.
  • Consider using a separate device for TikTok.
  • In parallel, build presence on platforms you control (newsletter, your own website, Mastodon/Bluesky).

Content formats that work for artists

  • Transitions: show the starting point and the final result of a piece, with a visual transition between them.
  • Expectation vs reality: the artist plans to do one thing and ends up doing another. A classic format.
  • Quick tutorial: “how I do X in 30 seconds”.
  • Reaction or duet: react to another artist’s work or technique.
  • Behind the scenes: getting ready for a concert, show, or opening night.
