There are two ways to enter the world of European techno. The fan who plans a flight around Dekmantel, or who wants to know which Berlin club won’t show up in the tourist guides. And the musician or DJ who wants to understand the circuit: where emerging artists get booked, where it is worth sending a proposal, and which dates on the calendar define the season.
This guide is for both. The thread is not the genre in the abstract — techno is a vast universe stretching from minimal to hard, from industrial to ambient — but the spaces and events that have shaped the European scene for thirty years. Places where the music matters, where technical sound quality is non-negotiable, and where the audience comes to listen.

The calendar: festivals by month
The European electronic music circuit has a clear seasonality. Winter belongs to clubs; spring opens with the first large-venue events; summer is the peak of outdoor festivals; autumn returns to clubs and closes the year with reference indoor events.

Three events you cannot ignore
Dekmantel (Amsterdam, August) is probably the most carefully curated festival in the global scene. It is not the biggest, nor the oldest: it is the one that has best maintained its artistic selection without giving ground to commercialisation. Its indoor venue (the Shelter, now Radion) and the outdoor site in Amsterdam’s Bos create two worlds within the same event. Being programmed here is a quality endorsement across the European scene.
Time Warp (Mannheim, April) is the reference for German techno at large scale. Since 1994, it has gathered what Berlin exports to the world in a converted industrial concert hall. The acoustics of the space are as much a part of the experience as the lineup. This is not a weekend festival in a field: it is techno in a space conceived for sound.
Fusion Festival (Lärz, June) is the circuit’s anomaly. It has no sponsors, sells no advertising, accepts no press. The site is an abandoned Soviet air base. Entry is a lottery system among community members. The lineup is never published. And yet it is the festival that more musicians around the world name as the reference for what an electronic party should be. For artists: getting in is difficult; if you do, it carries weight.

Berghain / Panorama Bar · Am Wriezener Bahnhof berghain.berlin — The absolute reference. Berghain on the ground floor: hard techno, massive sound, 12+ hour sets. Panorama Bar on the first floor: house and lighter electronics. The door is legendary for its selectivity — not social exclusion but atmospheric consistency. For artists: releasing here (Ostgut Ton, the in-house label) is a career turning point.
Tresor · Köpenicker Str. 70 tresorberlin.com — Since 1991, the club that defined Berlin’s sound immediately after reunification. Industrial techno in a concrete basement and a former vault. One of the best-sounding spaces in the city. Consistent programming, faithful to its origins.
Watergate · Falckensteinstr. 49 water-gate.de — On the banks of the Spree, with panoramic windows over the river. High-quality techno and house, varied programming, less uncompromising than Berghain but equally serious. One of the best sound systems in the city.
About Blank · Markgrafendamm 24c aboutblank.li — Alternative and political space, outdoor garden. Techno, experimental electronics, LGBTQ+ parties. Affordable prices, diverse crowd. Important in building Berlin’s queer scene.
Sisyphos · Hauptstraße 15 (Rummelsburg) sisyphos-berlin.de — In a former industrial compound in east Berlin. Weekend parties that extend into Monday. Multiple spaces, garden, community atmosphere. Less underground than Berghain, but with the same commitment to extended time.
Kraftwerk Berlin · Köpenicker Str. 70 Enormous industrial venue (former power station) for one-off events: Atonal, New Year, special sessions. Not a regular club but a space that redefines the scale of electronic sound.
Frankfurt
Robert Johnson · Nordring 131, Offenbach robert-johnson.de — In Offenbach (Frankfurt’s outskirts), one of Europe’s most influential clubs since the 1990s. Quality house and techno, demanding crowd, legendary sound system. Artists like Zip, Move D and Larry Heard built their European reputation here.
Leipzig
Institut für Zukunft (IfZ) · Zwickauer Str. 24 ifz.li — Leipzig has built its own significant techno scene. IfZ is its heart: industrial space, programming consistent with the experimental Saxon aesthetic, one of the best-kept secrets in the German scene for those who want to move beyond Berlin.
Netherlands — Amsterdam
Shelter · Overhoeksplein 3, Amsterdam shelteramsterdam.nl — Below the A’DAM tower, with views over the IJ. Techno and house, quality programming, a space that has grown alongside Amsterdam’s scene.
Radion · Louwesweg 1, Amsterdam radion.nl — Successor to the legendary Trouw (closed 2015). Funktion-One sound system, large but well-run space. It has taken on the legacy of Amsterdam’s best club scene.
Awakenings — The Awakenings label and promoter is the main engine of the Dutch scene: it organises the festival and manages several Amsterdam venues. Its programme is the best indicator of what is happening in the Netherlands.
United Kingdom — London, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds
London
Fabric · 77a Charterhouse St fabriclondon.com — London’s reference club since 1999. Three rooms, Bodysonic sound system (sound transmitted through the floor). Techno, drum and bass, house. Closed in 2016 under police pressure and reopened thanks to a massive community campaign. Its reopening was a political moment as much as a musical one.
Fold · Mowlem Trading Estate, E3 foldlondon.com — In east London, industrial space with one of the capital’s most powerful sound systems. Hard techno and rave scene. Has hosted some of the best lineups in recent years.
Drumsheds · Edmonton drumsheds.co.uk — Four converted industrial warehouses, capacity 10,000. One of Europe’s largest indoor rave venues, with sound designed specifically for electronic music at extreme volumes.
Glasgow
Sub Club · 22 Jamaica St subclub.co.uk — Since 1987, Scotland’s reference club. Small underground room (400 people), custom-built sound system. Legendary residents (Harri & Domenic). For those who follow the scene: Sub Club has appeared consistently on lists of the world’s best clubs for twenty years.
Manchester / Leeds
The White Hotel · Trafford Park, Manchester — Industrial space, high-quality techno and experimental programming. Has grown into a reference point for the north of England.
Belgrave Music Hall / Warehouse Project (Leeds) — The WHP is Leeds’s autumn event: a touring venue with top-tier programming from September to December. One of the UK’s best autumn circuits.
France — Paris
Rex Club · 5 Bd Poissonnière rexclub.com — Since 1981, Paris’s reference electronic club. Techno and house with programming that mixes legendary residents and top international artists. Reference Nexo sound system. Laurent Garnier built his reputation here in the 1990s.
Concrete · 69 Port de la Rapée (on a boat) concreteparis.fr — A floating club on the Seine. Open on weekends from Friday night until Monday morning — 48-hour sessions that have defined a unique Parisian rave model. Pure techno, no phones allowed.
La Station · 29 av. Corentin Cariou — Former heating station, converted industrial space. Quality electronic programming, multipurpose venue.
Belgium — Brussels
Fuse · 208 Rue Blaes / Bleisstraat fuse.be — Since 1994, Brussels’s reference club. Single room with great acoustics, programming faithful to quality techno. Lil Louis, Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills. One of the European clubs with the most consistent track record and no concessions.
Switzerland — Zurich
Hive Club · Geroldstrasse 5 hiveclub.ch — Zurich’s techno benchmark: black room, powerful sound, demanding programming. Quality local residents and top-level international guests.
Zukunft · Dienerstrasse 33 zukunft.com — Neighbourhood club, underground atmosphere, experimental and auteur techno programming. Less massive than Hive, equally serious.
Czech Republic — Prague
Ankali · Voctářova 2803/10 ankaliprague.com — Prague has built its own significant electronic scene. Ankali is its reference point: industrial space, Funktion-One sound system, programming that mixes emerging local artists with top-tier international guests.
Poland — Kraków, Warsaw
Tama · Łazienkowska 14, Warsaw — One of the most important clubs in the eastern European scene. Techno and experimental electronics, with one of the best sounds in the region.
Unsound (Kraków) — Although it is a festival, Unsound has turned Kraków into a fixed point on the international October circuit. Satellite parties across various city venues last a week and define what the winter season will look like.
Spain — Barcelona, Madrid
Barcelona
Input · Carrer de la Mare de Déu del Port 71 inputbcn.com — Barcelona’s reference techno club. Industrial space at the port, Martin Audio sound system, consistently high prime-line programming. Main room and a second room (Input Dark) for more underground sessions. The main benchmark for the local scene.
Nitsa Club (Sala Apolo) · C/ Nou de la Rambla 113 sala-apolo.com/nitsa-club — Weekly night (Fridays/Saturdays) at Sala Apolo. Since 1993, the reference event of Barcelona’s electronic scene. Has programmed practically everyone. Iconic atmosphere, a venue with history.
Sónar by Night — During the Sónar festival (June), the nighttime programming is the moment when Barcelona concentrates the best of the international circuit in just a few days. Sónar+D (the daytime component) is where music and technology converge.
Madrid
Mondo Disko · C/ Barceló 11 mondodisko.es — Since 1997, Madrid’s reference electronic club. House and techno, programming that has stood the test of time. Friday and Saturday sessions.
For musicians: how the circuit works
The European electronic music circuit is more accessible than it looks from the outside, but it has its own unwritten rules.
The way in is from the bottom, not the top. Work the local scene, play small venues, release on quality labels — even small ones, even digital — and build a real track record. None of the events in this guide programmes artists without a documented history.
Labels matter as much as festivals. Ostgut Ton (Berghain), Dekmantel Records, Kompakt (Cologne), Tresor Records, R&S Records (Belgium) — releasing on reference labels is the best external indicator of quality. If Dekmantel has released your music, every door in the scene opens much more easily.
Sónar is Spain’s gateway into the international circuit. Sónar+D (the conference and convergence component) is where European promoters, festival curators and international labels meet. For a Catalan or Spanish artist, having a relationship with the Sónar ecosystem is strategically important.
ADE Amsterdam (October) is the industry gathering. It is not just parties: it is where agents, promoters and labels build their agendas for the coming year. Having an agent who attends is far more useful than performing there yourself.
