A technical rider is a living document. What works in a 500-person venue can be completely inadequate for an outdoor festival, and a string quartet’s rider has nothing in common with an electronic music producer’s. This guide covers the adaptations you need to make based on formation and context.

By formation type

String trio or quartet / solo piano

The classical rider is the exception in the world of riders: it may need no PA at all in small venues. But the specific demands of the acoustic world are non-negotiable.

Piano tuning: the critical point. Always specify: tuning 2 hours before the concert (not the day before), model preference (Steinway D concert grand, or Yamaha CFIII as alternative), room temperature between 18 and 22°C and relative humidity between 45 and 60%. An out-of-tune piano at a chamber concert is a disaster that has no solution once you’re on stage.

Minimal or no amplification. In venues up to 300 people, explicitly state whether you play without PA. In larger venues where you need reinforcement, specify: very subtle and natural reinforcement, zero compression on strings, symphonic-quality sound system. Monitors can be disorienting for musicians used to hearing themselves directly — indicate whether you want them or not.

Stage layout for acoustic balance. A string quartet in semicircle with violins to the audience’s left isn’t a whim — it’s acoustics. Always include a clear stage plot with the exact arrangement. Indicate whether specific chairs are needed (no armrests, adjustable height for the cellist).

Plan B: If the venue’s piano is unacceptable (out of tune, poor action), you have two options: rent an external concert piano (cost to agree by contract — who pays?) or change the programme to pieces without piano. Include a clause in your rider about the minimum acceptable piano condition and the resolution terms if it isn’t met.


Jazz group (quartet, quintet)

Semi-acoustic by definition: combines acoustic instruments with light amplification. Improvisation demands that all musicians can hear each other.

Acoustic piano preferred, never digital without prior agreement. Specify: grand piano preferred, upright acceptable for bar or small venue gigs, electronic keyboard ONLY if agreed in advance and the model is professional (Nord Stage, Yamaha CP). A home keyboard is not acceptable.

Monitors for improvisation. Unlike classical, jazz requires all musicians to hear each other in real time. One wedge per musician minimum, with independent mixes if the venue allows. The bassist needs to hear the drummer; the saxophonist needs to hear themselves.

Double bass: DI or microphone. Specify your preferred system. If you bring your own pickup (Realist, K&K), say so. If not, ask for a quality microphone (AKG C414, Neumann U87) aimed at the f-holes, not the bridge.

Plan B: If the piano isn’t acceptable, have a list of pieces that work without piano (bass, drums and horn trio). You don’t need to announce it, but having the repertoire ready takes the pressure off on the day.


Solo singer-songwriter or duo

The shortest rider is, paradoxically, the one that requires the most precision. With fewer elements, every decision matters twice as much.

Vocal chain above all else. Specify the microphone (Shure SM58 minimum, Sennheiser e945 or Neumann KMS 105 if possible), the preamp, and that you don’t want excessive compression. A human voice with aggressive compression loses all its dynamics.

Loop station or pedals: power and DI. If you use a loop station (Boss RC, Ableton Live, Boomerang), specify: stable 9V power supply (not batteries), active DI, zero acceptable latency, separate channel for effects return. A loop station with latency makes synchronisation impossible.

One monitor in front, not to the side. A single wedge directly in front, 1.5 metres away. No side monitors that generate feedback. Mix: vocals + guitar at 50/50, nothing else.

Plan B: Always carry a spare XLR cable and a pocket passive DI. If the venue’s system fails at the last minute, you can connect directly with the bare minimum. For very small venues, consider playing completely acoustic — many 50–80-person spaces don’t need PA if the artist has good vocal projection.


Rock / pop band

The most extensive rider. The key is balancing what you want with what a venue can realistically provide.

Backline with alternatives. For each amplifier, specify first choice and two acceptable alternatives. Format: “Guitar: Fender Twin Reverb / Marshall JCM800 / any valve combo minimum 40W.” If you bring your own amp, mark it [OWN — NON-SUBSTITUTABLE].

Complete and clear input list. A table: channel number, instrument/source, connector (XLR/Jack/DI), notes. Typically 16–32 channels. Include all drum channels separately (kick, snare, hihat, rack tom, floor tom, overheads ×2, room if possible).

Individual monitor mixes. One monitor aux per musician minimum. Specify who wants what: the vocalist wants vocals + guitar; the drummer wants everything with the kick loud; the bassist wants bass + kick. In larger venues, ask whether there’s a dedicated monitor engineer.

Plan B: Prepare a reduced version of your rider (see final section) for venues that can’t fulfil the full rider. Define which elements are absolutely non-negotiable (your own amp, minimum monitor mix) and which you can let go (additional rack toms, specific return effects).


Electronic music / DJ / live electronics

No traditional backline, but this is one of the most technical and specific riders that exists. A latency error or wrong cable can make the performance impossible.

Digital console mandatory. Specify: digital console (Yamaha QL5, Allen & Heath dLive, Digico SD). NO analogue consoles if you use internal processing. The latency of an analogue chain can desynchronise audio from your internal system.

Clean, dedicated power. Specify: dedicated 16A circuit (not shared with lighting systems), preferably with UPS or power conditioner. Electrical noise in an electronics system is audible and can damage equipment.

Active DIs and your own cables. Always bring your own active DIs (Radial J48, BSS AR133). Specify the cable type for each output. Don’t assume the venue has the right cables. One hour of soundcheck is the minimum acceptable — ask for two.

Monitor: full-range, no subwoofers in the return. The monitor system for electronics must reproduce all frequencies linearly. A conventional wedge cut at the low end is unacceptable if you work with low frequencies as a central musical element. Always ask for the monitor system specs.

Plan B: Bring a complete backup system on a second computer or controller. In live electronics, a hardware or software failure can bring down the entire performance. 100% of professional live electronics artists work with a dual system. It’s not optional.


Dance or circus show with live sound

The sound must follow the movement, not the other way around. Coordination between the sound engineer and the company is part of the rider.

Cue list and communication system. If there’s live music + playback tracks + effects, specify who calls the cues and how (timecode, MIDI, verbal communication with technician). The rider must include the show’s technical script, not just the equipment list.

Two independent monitor systems. If there are live musicians and dancers/acrobats, each group needs its own return system. Dancers need to hear the tempo; musicians need to hear each other. Shared systems create confusion.

Clearly defined stage space. The stage plot must show the musicians’ zone AND the movement zone. An acrobat and a double bass sharing the stage without planning is an accident waiting to happen.


By venue type

Small venue (up to 200 people)

Bring a "minimum version" of your rider

Especially for small venues, your full rider can be unrealistic. Always prepare a one-page version with your absolute minimums. Mark each element as [ESSENTIAL] or [DESIRABLE]. If the venue can cover the essentials, the concert can work.

Assume one technician for everything

In small venues, the same person handles FOH and monitors. Simplify your monitor demands accordingly. A single monitor mix for everyone is realistic; individual mixes are not.

Outdoor festival

Don't assume shared backline

At festivals, backline is typically provided by the organisation and shared between artists. Your rider must clearly specify what you're bringing and what you need them to provide. If the amp you requested isn't available, you need to know weeks in advance, not on the day.

Weather protection for electronics

Specify: waterproof covers for all electronic equipment, protected area in case of rain, shutdown protocol in case of electrical storm. This isn't paranoia — it's standard protocol in any professional outdoor rider.

Ultra-clear stage plot for fast changeovers

At festivals, changeovers between artists can be 20–30 minutes. Your stage plot must be readable and executable within that time. Simplify as much as possible. Bring labelled cables and connectors.

Special venue (church, industrial space, marquee, heritage building)

Ask for photos and dimensions before finalising the rider

A Romanesque church can have 4 seconds of reverb. An industrial warehouse can have lateral echoes that make clean sound impossible. Without knowing the space, you can't write a useful rider. Always ask for photos, floor and ceiling dimensions, and if possible, a prior visit or a test recording.

Power supply: always verify

A heritage space or a festival marquee may have unstable or insufficient power. Always specify: minimum power required, dedicated circuit for sound (separate from lighting), power conditioner if the space is problematic. Always bring a multimeter to verify voltage on site.

Performance with guest musicians

The headliner's rider takes precedence, but adapts

When there are guests, the base rider is yours. Add a "Guests" section with the additional channels and monitors they need. Share the rider with guests at least 3 weeks before so they can validate it or request adjustments. Discovering on concert day that the guest needs 4 additional channels that aren't available is entirely avoidable.

Reserve extra soundcheck time

A performance with guests needs at least 30 extra minutes of soundcheck to integrate the new elements. Specify this in the rider and in the contract. It's non-negotiable: the guest doesn't know the venue, doesn't know the sound system and doesn't know your set.


The tips you can’t forget: Plans B and protocols

Regardless of formation or venue, these points always apply:

Always bring your own:

  • Pocket DI (Radial ProDI or equivalent) — it will save you more times than you expect
  • Spare XLR cable (at least 2, 10 metres)
  • Adapters (Jack → XLR, XLR → Jack, XLR female → female)
  • Power strip with surge protection
  • Torch (for setup moments in the dark)
  • Gaffer tape and cable ties

Prior communication:

  • Send the rider at least 3 weeks in advance. For major festivals, 6 weeks.
  • Confirm receipt in writing and request written confirmation of what they can and can’t cover.
  • Call the venue’s technician 48 hours before. Emails get misread; phone calls resolve issues.

On concert day:

  • Arrive with the time you specified in the rider. If you say you need 2 hours of soundcheck, arrive 2 hours early.
  • Check the power supply first, before connecting anything.
  • If something isn’t as agreed, you have the right to flag it. If there’s no time to resolve it, document the discrepancy in writing (email, message) for any subsequent dispute.

The rider as a legal document: The rider is an annex to the contract. If the venue doesn’t fulfil the rider and this affects the performance, you have grounds. But the rider must be signed or confirmed in writing. A rider sent by email and not replied to is not an acceptance.

When a small venue promoter receives your 4-page full rider, the first thing they think is “impossible”. When they receive your one-page rider with three clear requirements, the first thing they think is “easy”.
