When Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, thousands of artists and creators left. Many found an ecosystem of platforms they hadn’t known existed: Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Funkwhale, Bookwyrm. All share one characteristic: they’re not owned by a large corporation, there’s no algorithm manipulating what you see, and your data isn’t used for advertising.

What is the Fediverse

The Fediverse (from “federated universe”) is a set of platforms that communicate with each other through the ActivityPub protocol. Like email — which lets you send a message from a Gmail account to a Proton account — the Fediverse lets a Mastodon user follow a Pixelfed account or receive posts from PeerTube.

Each platform runs on an independent server. Nobody “owns” the network. If a server shuts down, the ecosystem continues.

Mastodon: Twitter but yours

Mastodon is the natural replacement for X. Microblogging format (up to 500 characters per post), chronological timeline without an algorithm, no advertising.

Getting started on Mastodon:

When you register with Mastodon you choose a server (instance). Recommendations for artists:

mastodon.art: the reference instance for visual artists. Active community, active moderation.
musician.social: for musicians.
mastodon.social: the largest generalist instance.
scholar.social: for academics, researchers, and educators in the arts.

You can follow accounts on other servers without any problem. The choice of server mainly affects the local community you’ll find.

Strengths: chronological content, very active niche communities, no advertising, no manipulative algorithm.

Weaknesses: slower growth if you’re coming from Instagram or X. Discovery is less automated — you need to search actively.

Bluesky: the successor to Twitter

Bluesky was born as a project by Jack Dorsey (Twitter’s founder) to create a decentralised microblogging protocol. It’s now independent and growing rapidly among journalists, artists, and creators who’ve left X.

Unlike Mastodon, Bluesky has an interface very similar to Twitter. Federation is technically possible but less visible to end users.

Recommendation: for artists who want a Twitter replacement with a familiar interface, Bluesky is the most accessible option. For artists who want specific art communities, Mastodon is better.

Pixelfed: Instagram without Instagram

Pixelfed is the Fediverse equivalent of Instagram. Visual feed, square and vertical formats, Stories. But without an algorithm, without advertising, and without Meta tracking your data.

Pixelfed instances are smaller than Instagram, but the artist community is proportionally active and very receptive. For artists who want visual presence but don’t want Instagram, it’s a genuine alternative.

Recommended instances: pixelfed.social, pixelfed.art (art-focused).

PeerTube and Funkwhale: video and music

PeerTube is the Fediverse’s alternative to YouTube. Videos are hosted on independent servers, with no advertising, no surveillance. For artists with concerts, tutorials, or documentaries, it’s a sovereign archive platform.

Funkwhale is the Fediverse’s music platform: upload your album, manage your discography, interact with fans. Similar to SoundCloud but decentralised and without advertising.

Do I have to abandon Instagram and TikTok to be on the Fediverse?

No. The optimal strategy for many artists is:

Use commercial platforms for discovery (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) — that’s where most of the audience is.
Use the Fediverse for community and sovereign archiving — where you have real control.
The newsletter as the base — the asset you have regardless of everything else.

You don’t need to be everywhere. But having an account on Mastodon or Pixelfed requires little maintenance and gives you presence in a growing ecosystem.

Minority languages thrive here

The Fediverse is especially welcoming to minority and regional languages. Unlike Instagram or TikTok, where content in Welsh, Basque, Breton, or Galician can feel marginal, Fediverse communities actively value linguistic diversity. There are dedicated instances for many minority language communities, and chronological timelines mean your content isn’t buried by an algorithm that optimises for English. If you create in a minority language, the Fediverse deserves a serious look.
